Stephen Hillenmeyer Landscape Services HistoryLouis Hillenmeyer (1885-1965) III GENERATION
The third generation was led
by the two youngest sons of
Hector F. Hillenmeyer,
Louis (1885-1965) and
Walter (1890-1945). It was during this period that
the continued production
of fruit and fruit trees was
prevalent, but significant
change and emphasis toward
the production and use of
ornamental plants took place.
Greater attention was given
to landscaping and
beautification. There was
also a significant increase in
the mail order business,
catalogs and price lists were
mailed throughout the
country. It was during this
time that the nursery was
the largest recipient of mail
through the Lexington
Post Office, many of our
shipments were made
by parcel post. During the
depression years the nurser
entered into a contract
with Sears Roebuck and Co.
and people throughout the
southeastern United States
would place orders from the
Sears catalog to their
Chicago office. There the
orders would be processed
and sent to Hillenmeyer's
to be filled and shipped out.
