The youngest son of
Francis X. Hillenmeyer,
Hector Francis Hillenmeyer
(1849-1923), headed the
second generation. A time
during which the nursery
expanded and grew and
new factors were introduced,
bond labor was free,
extended ways of transit
brought competition, and
spraying for insects and
fungus came on the horizon.
The beginning of the use
of trees, shrubs, and vines
for adornment of the home
became factors in nursery
production, bringing
problems and opportunities.
There was a corresponding
expansion in the Nursery
and the laying of the
foundation, each of the
leaders of the first two
generations had in his
own way' attained the
measure of his ambition.
Hector was a man of
many talents, he wrote
articles on horticulture
for publication, he was
often questioned on
matters pertaining to
his business, and was
considered an authority
on weather, having kept
